Irene Rainsberger, age 99, of Wilmington, passed peacefully at Clinton Memorial Hospital on Monday, May 9, 2022.
Born in Ostrander, Ohio on December 14, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Jesse 'Russell' Pounds.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Rev. Lynn C. Rainsberger. She was also preceded in death by her sons Ray Rainsberger, Ben Rainsberger, and infant son, Mark Rainsberger.
In 1944, Irene graduated from Ohio Northern University. Irene and Lynn served many Methodist churches in the central Ohio and surrounding areas. Irene worked in the Methodist Church Conference Office for years. The two were very involved in community affairs and activities. Irene was a member of the Wilmington United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women's Group.
Spending time outside, walking, and riding her bike, Irene remained active well into her nineties. She enjoyed reading and working crossword and other puzzles. Her independence was very important, and she was able to maintain it into her elderly years.
Irene was known for being quite competitive, joining the fun early as a member of the high school softball team. The family bonded over their continued love for games of all kinds, including a game of SkipBo a few days before she passed.
Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses: Paul Rainsberger and Susan Koenig of Columbia, Missouri, and Doris and Brian Stritenberger of Wilmington; grandchildren: Keri Rainsberger, Karl Rainsberger, Dustin Rainsberger, Seth Rainsberger, Kayli (Jonathan) Johnson, Heather (Bradey) Jobson and Richard Wilcox; seven great-grandchildren; special family members, Karen Rainsberger and Kathy Smith; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Irene was preceded in death by brother, Ralph L. Pounds; and sister, Martha Weaver.
Memorial contributions are suggested to The American Cancer Society and the Wilmington United Methodist Church.
The Rainsberger family is hosting a celebration of Irene's life on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at the Wilmington United Methodist Church. The service will take place at 11am.
